Kerala
Daughter deficit?
 Share  ·    Comment (2)   ·    print   ·
H. Vibhu A tribal child at her residence in Poringalkuthu Kadar colony near Vazhachal Forest Division, Thrissur district. The 'female deficit' in the 0-6 age group increased in six of the total 14 districts in Kerala in the two decades from 1991.

Is there a shift in the attitude of Kerala society towards the value of daughters? Is son preference spreading in a State once known to be above extreme gender bias? A recent study on child sex ratio generates more questions than it answers. By R. KRISHNAKUMAR in Thiruvananthapuram

It's very premature to comment that there is a gender bias, only after a
sustained data of more than 10 years conclude this, then its a matter of
concern.

I am from Kerala and my family had roughly equal number of females and males in the present generation. I notice that for almost all of my cousins and brother have babies with baby boys outnumbering baby girls by about 8:1. But all of my cousins had their babies in less than 15 months after their marriage. This clearly shows that there has been no sex-selection. The question has been on my mind ever since is whether environmental factors or other factors can change probability of a baby of one sex vis-a-vis the other ? Biology certainly will not preclude such a thing, but whether such a thing is actually happening in Kerala is a little explored open question. Equally important is to ask whether such environmental factors be humanly controlled is a new "method" for sex-selection. All the studies mentioned above overlook this possibility.
