It is a great tragedy that we are not able to get out of the conundrum called casteism. The authorities must brutally put down such inhuman crimes in the name of castes. What is more hocking is that this has occurred in a progressive state of Tamil Nadu. That too, this is happening at regular intervals in some parts of the state. There should be exemplary punishments for the perpetrators of the crime so that this incident remains the last caste-based atrocity.

Sri.S.Dorairaj's article is an exposure of the shameful practice of
untouchability prevalent in southern parts of Tamilnadu. The
Vadugapatti episode is a tip of the iceberg. With the voices against
the social malaise frequently heard in high decibels, thanks indeed to
the movement conducted by TNUEF and other progressive forces, such
instances where caste discriminations raise their ugly head, are
brought to the fore by the media. Unfortunately, the contribution and
the role of caste organisations, both the upper and the lower, are
far from adequate in mitigating the hatred, misconception, and deep
resentment as they cross swords against each other. They bank on
polarising the caste votes for their survival. They do not tie the
social knot, but tend to untie the inter- caste nupital knot through
coersion. The centre and the state have a greater role to play to
cement the emotional and pschycological wedge , through puissant
measures.
