Meeting social obligations

THE crisp two-page Statement of Objects and Reasons explaining the rationale behind the introduction of The Annamalai University Bill, 2013, on April 15 in the Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly declares: “It is the social obligation of the [Tamil Nadu] government to protect the livelihood of the teaching staff of the [Annamalai] University and to ensure the imparting of higher education to the rural students in and around Annamalai Nagar, [Chidambaram].” The Bill seeks to “repeal and re-enact” the existing law governing the institution and in doing so snaps the eight-decade-long ties between the university and the heirs of its founder, Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar.

This is a very good step taken by the Tamilnadu Government in the interest of the prestigious Annamalai University. Use of brokers in admissions to the engineering courses devalues education.

This is indeed a significant move by the Tamil Nadu Government. The Medical College, Dental College, Agricultural and the Engineering Colleges must be removed from the control of the University and brought under the State's Universities. The University has already fuelled a major social crisis by conferring degrees on thousands of overseas students through Distance education - they have never studied, but are now degree holders. When the sanctioned student strength is just 830 for engineering, 9000 students were admitted on assurance that degrees will be awarded. This has been the order of the day. All employment brokers must be brought to book and the unqualified teachers and non-teaching staff must be summarily dismissed without any compensation
