In purely electoral terms, the party's political future depends on the leadership succession plan both in the party and in the government and on the ability to regain control of the key States that now seem to have been permanently handed over to non-Congress regional parties.

The Congress’ shift towards neoliberalism and actions that appear insensitive, distant and even cynically patronising have alienated its core constituency of the poor, the minorities and the middle classes.
